Anion Exchange Capacity Explains Deep Soil Nitrate Accumulation in Brazilian Amazon Croplands

چکیده
Abstract Deep tropical soils with net anion exchange capacity can adsorb nitrate and might delay the eutrophication of surface waters that is often associated many temperate croplands. We investigated soil pools in deep Southern Brazilian Amazon, where conversion forest Cerrado to intensive fertilized soybean soybean-maize cropping expanded rapidly 2000s. found mean top 8 m increased from 143 kg N ha −1 1,052 1,161 This accumulation croplands aligned estimated surpluses Soil explained magnitude accumulation. High retention was consistent current low levels streamwater exported sites were far saturation, which suggests continue for longer under practices, although mechanisms such as competition other anions preferential water flowpaths bypass could reduce time saturation.

Significant accumulation of nitrate in Chinese semi-humid croplands
Soil nitrate is important for crop growth, but it can also leach to groundwater causing nitrate contamination, a threat to human health. Here, we report a significant accumulation of soil nitrate in Chinese semi-humid croplands based upon more than 7000 samples from 141 sites collected from 1994 to 2015. In the 0-4 meters depth of soil, total nitrate accumulation reaches 453 ± 39, 749 ± 75, 119...

متن کاملAgricultural settlement and soil quality in the Brazilian Amazon
This paper discusses the implications of poor or non-existent information on soil quality, at the proper scale, during the planning and implementation of settlement projects in the Brazilian Amazon. Based on data from the Machadinho settlement project, Rondônia, we show that most settlers had no knowledge about the agricultural capability of the area, did not receive technical information, coul...
